The Must Have Baby Led Weaning Products

Here we have compiled the 11 must have baby led weaning products

1. Nuby Sure Grip Mat

This mat has been the best thing for avoiding a huge mess on the floor during meal times. Before I owned this product, I used to put Dexter’s food on his tray and let him at it. Invariably, he would swipe half of the food off the tray and onto the floor completely accidentally.

Since I have introduced this tray, hardly anything falls on the floor. It is a mat that sticks really well to the highchair tray and has two small bowl areas for baby to pick food out of it. The rubber means the mat is easily cleaned. I simply run it under the hot tap after each meal and stick it in the dishwasher at the end of the day. For £7 it’s an absolute bargain.

2.Ikea Antilop Highchair

Baby Led Weaning Equipment - The Definitive List | Mummy to Dex (4)Pretty much any high chair with a tray will do, but this Ikea Antilop one has rave reviews from other baby led weaners. The main reason being that the chair can be easily disassembled and thrown in the dishwasher to be cleaned. Trust me, baby led weaning is a messy business and the fact it can be chucked in the dishwasher is a godsend.

With Dexter, we had a high chair with pokey holes which meant food got stuck down them which then turned into disgusting mould. We then switched to a Joie Mimzy Snacker, which was lovely and comfy, quite easy to clean, but didn’t come apart like this one.

We got this one for Felix and have never looked back!

3. Nuby Lock and Roll On The Go Bib

These bibs are a must have for catching all the food that inevitably gets dropped by those little hands that are still learning. Firstly, this saves you having to clean up messy legs and secondly, it saves the food neatly in a pile ready to be popped back on the tray again.

These bibs are nice and soft, I often have to try and stop Dex from gumming it to ease his teething pains and remind him he is meant to be eating the actual food!

4. Munchkin Hot White Plates

Baby Led Weaning Equipment - The Definitive List | Mummy to Dex (7)

I absolutely adore these plates. Everytime I make food, I place it on these plates and they tell me if the food is too hot by turning white. It’s great for things like I’ve blitzed in the microwave like jacket potatoes and the like. Once I’m happy the food is cool enough, I transfer from the plate to the Nuby sure grip mat.

At the moment Dex isn’t ready to have a plate in front of him as he’d simply swipe it off the tray. Munchkin also make hot white baby led weaning bowls too!

5. Numnum Cutlery

These spoons are ideal for when you are transitioning from using hands to a proper spoon. The ‘pre spoon’ grabs hold of liquid items such as yoghurt and purees and doesn’t spill like a conventional spoon. At the moment these are only available in the US which is a shame for us UK citizens, but hopefully that will change soon.

6. Munchkin Hot White Spoons

I love these Munchkin white hot spoons. They work in the same principle as the plates above.

Why spoons on a baby led weaning list though, I hear you cry! Well, I like to offer Dex a pre loaded spoon of yoghurt or porridge in the morning. I simply dip the spoon in the porridge and let him take it off me (or the tray). It can get quite messy, but that’s the fun of baby led weaning right?

For me, baby wipes are a huge essential for post meal clean up because baby’s face, hands and probably body will be covered in food. I like these water wipes because they contain 99% water and are really, really wet which makes for an easier clean up.

This amazing coverall bib means that not one scrap of food gets onto baby’s clothes or the highchair. I don’t know how we ever lived without it. Read my full review of this amazing product here. This bib has saved me hours of cleaning up and stopped Dex ruining more vests.

9. Munchkin 360 Cup

Baby Led Weaning Equipment - The Definitive List | Mummy to Dex (15)

I’m often asked what is the best baby led weaning cup and I always recommend the Munchkin 260. It can take a little while for baby to get used to this so I used a free flow teat cup alongside for the first few months, but by 10 months old, baby has usually got the hang of it! I love this cup as there are zero spillages and the ‘spout’ is nice and soft in baby’s mouth.

If you want to look as fashionable as possible whilst you are traversing your baby led weaning journey, you can’t get cooler than the Bamboo Bamboo range of baby led weaning equipment.

We adore our fox shaped section plate and the stunning bowl. At £14.99 a piece, they’re quite pricey as far as plates go, but they look absolutely stunning and are a must have if you plan to Instagram your journey.

The plates last well, stick to the highchair and are dishwasher safe so for me they’re a great investment. We’ve had our plate for nearly three years and our bowl for six months with zero issues.

If you have laminate flooring, you don’t need to worry too much about a splash mat (although you will need a dustpan and brush, a mop and a good vacuum cleaner!) but a splash mat is essential if your home is carpeted. This one from Tots Ahoy is good value, easily cleaned and looks gorgeous too!

What is the coin rule for baby-led weaning? ›

Offer finger foods that are soft, easy to swallow, and broken or cut into pieces that your baby cannot choke on. A good rule of thumb is that soft and mushy finger foods are safe for your baby. Small, round, coin-shaped, hard, chewy, crunchy, slippery, or sticky foods may lead to choking.

What do you need to start BLW? ›

Try to include food that contains iron, such as meat, fish, fortified breakfast cereals, dark green vegetables, beans and lentils, at each meal. Your baby's diet should consist of a variety of the following: fruit and vegetables, including ones with bitter flavours, such as broccoli, cauliflower, spinach and cabbage.

What are the cons of BLW? ›

BLW has some obvious downsides. The infant may not get enough energy, iron, zinc, vitamins, and other nutrients, or too much protein, saturated fat, salt, or sugar. The risk of choking, which must be distinguished from the physiological gagging reflex, has not been ruled out by scientific studies.

Is baby-led weaning better than purées? ›

Baby-led weaning often exposes babies to a wider variety of foods, textures, and flavors [1], which may help to reduce picky eating behaviors later on: a huge win! Greater exposure usually leads to greater acceptance of foods in toddlerhood and beyond.

What is the difference between BLW and TW? ›

Key features of BLW include self-feeding foods in their natural form, eating with the rest of the family and consuming family foods. This differs from traditional weaning (TW) where parents initially spoon feed purees, alongside finger foods, before graduating to more textured food.

Do you need a tray for baby-led weaning? ›

Put your baby in a fully upright highchair, ideally with a foot-plate and detachable tray so baby can eat at the table with you. Let your child self-feed 100%. This means picking up the food and bringing it to their own mouth. Offer large pieces of food that your baby can easily pick up and hold on to.

What should a weaning schedule look like? ›

Introduce your baby's first meal at a time they are most content. They shouldn't be too hungry as this is just a taste. I suggest midday as you can offer your baby their milk at 11am and then give them their solid food between 12 and 12:30pm. Offer a root vegetable purée, making sure the texture is runny.

How do you cut eggs in BLW? ›

Once cooked, place the egg in a bowl of cold water to cool down (2 to 3 minutes). When cool, peel the outer shell and slice the egg into quarters (4 fingers).

What are the best first solid foods for babies? ›

Solid foods may be introduced in any order. However, puréed meats, poultry, beans and iron-fortified cereals are recommended as first foods, especially if your baby has been primarily breastfed, since they provide key nutrients. Only one new single-ingredient food should be introduced at a time.

Do you need a baby food maker for baby-led weaning? ›

But, first let me say, of course you don't need a baby food maker to make your own baby food. A pot with a lid, steamer basket, and blender and/or food processor will do the trick every time. And many baby foods can be roasted in the oven, sautéed on the stove-top, cooked in the microwave, or simply mashed while raw.
