Edgar / Edgar Haircut (2024)

About

An Edgar refers to a Latino man with an Edgar Haircut or Edgar Cut depicted as a hairstyle that is both a high-fade and a bowl cut that cuts off at the forehead. The haircut was popularized in late 2019 but received increased attention at the end of 2021 when a high school in Texas banned the look. Edgars started to trend on social media as a pop culture reference and cliché, especially on TikTok in early 2022 where Edgars became associated with being short in height and wearing True Religion clothes. The haircut is similar to the Bird's Nest Haircut / Zoomer Perm and is also related to the slang term Takuache.

Origin

Some argue that the Edgar haircut has existed in indigenous South American culture since the Mayans,[1] however, it wasn't dubbed the "Edgar" until early 2019 on Instagram. On February 6th, 2019, a Puerto Rican barber named anthonybarberpr on Instagram[2] was featured on the Instagram[3] account of mlbpuertorico. The post is a video of him etching hall of fame MLB player Edgar Martinez into the back of a young boy's haircut. Over the course of three years, the video received roughly 8,700 views (shown below).

Despite the rise of the name "Edgar" in the late 2010s and early 2020s, the haircut was previously called the "Takuache Haircut," which dates back further.[4]

Spread

Going into 2019, the Edgar haircut started receiving meme attention on Twitter. For instance, on March 27th, 2019, Twitter[5] user vuhsace posted a quote retweet that captioned a guy with an Edgar, "After you’ve defeated all the Edgars and Joses you must face these 2," earning roughly 19,200 likes in three years (shown below, left). On October 29th, 2019, Twitter[6] user ______juls posted a similar tweet about a Boss Fight, earning roughly 13,400 likes in two and a half years (shown below, right).

"Anti-Edgar Cut" Petition

In November 2021, students at Riverside High School in El Paso, Texas created a petition to ban the Edgar cut at school. On November 2nd, 2021, the Instagram[7] page therealfitfamelpaso was the first to post about it, including within their carousel post an image of the petition and earning roughly 11,300 likes. On the same day, they posted a video[8] of multiple students signing the petition, earning roughly 10,700 likes over the course of six months (shown below).

The story spread to both Twitter[9] and iFunny [10] going into the remainder of the year.

Edgar TikToks

In 2021, the Edgar haircut started to be referenced in memes on TikTok. For instance, on October 31st, 2021, TikToker[11] pedri.potter posted a video that referenced a Bhad Bhabie song, earning roughly 3.4 million plays and 731,300 likes in seven months (shown below, left). On January 18th, 2022, TikToker[12] itzmegabe2 posted a video about being called "Edgar" that earned roughly 1 million plays and 155,400 likes in four months (shown below, right).

In 2022, a trend of walking behind Edgars or Edgar POV memes started appearing on TikTok, using the song "Who Do You Love" by rapper YG.[13] On March 30th, 2022, TikToker[14] diego.smoove posted a video that earned roughly 3.8 million plays and 647,500 likes in one month (since deleted). More TikTokers with Edgar cuts started making similar videos going into April 2022. For instance, on April 16th, 2022, TikToker[15] chedgar_isa posted a video with text reading, "POV: 'Edgar hasn't found his Latina,'" earning roughly 3.5 million plays and 846,000 likes in three weeks (since deleted).

Takuache

Takuache is a slang term used to describe young Mexican-American men who enjoy driving large pickup trucks and wearing expensive Mexican apparel such as boots, belts and jeans. They are often seen with a high bald tapered hairstyle, also known as the Edgar haircut, which is a name Takuaches themselves are sometimes referred to as. The catchphrases of a Takuache include “la mamalona” (truck), “cuh” (short for cousin) and “no quema cuh” ([My truck] cannot do a burnout). The most common depiction of a Takuache is an image of a short Mexican teen with the aforementioned haircut and a wide smile.
