Hello Kitty Plush Crochet Pattern - Amigurumi - Wonder Crochet (2024)

I’ve always felt a connection to Valentine’s Day since by birthday is two days before. I would always get heart-shaped desserts and love-themed cards from friends since that is what the stores sold around that time. My favorite of course were the Valentines themed plushies with cute animals holding hearts with cute sayings like “Be Mine.” As I’ve gotten more involved in the crochet and especially amigurumi world, I have discovered the cuteness of Sanrio characters. If you don’t know what Sanrio is, it is a Japanese company that produces merchandise based on characters they create. It focuses on everything “kawaii” which means cute in Japanese. Since I love kawaii characters, it was only a matter of time for me to make a Hello Kitty plush! This one is Valentine’s Day themed with her colors and holding a heart but feel free to use any colors you would like.

For this pattern, I used Premier Parfait Chunky yarn (which is my favorite yarn) for a soft pastel look.Click here to get Premier yarn for this project. If you enjoy this pattern, pleasegive me a follow on social mediaand let me know what other free patterns you would love to see! MATERIALS & TOOLS

ABBREVIATIONS

  • CH – chain
  • SC – single crochet
  • INC – single crochet increase (2 SC in each stitch)
  • DEC – decrease (I use the invisible decrease in all of my creations for a cleaner look)
  • HDC – half double crochet
  • DC – double crochet
  • SLST – slip stitch
  • FO – fasten off
  • Magic ring (MR) – Make a loop, leaving a long tail to work with. Insert the hook in the center of the loop, yarn over, and draw up a loop. Yarn over, and pull through to make the first chain (this does not count as a stitch). Continue to crochet over the loop and tail with the number of stitches called for. There are many excellent YouTube videos on how to make a magic circle if you are a visual learner! Always move your stitch marker to the last stitch in the round.

THIS PATTERN IS WORKED IN CONTINUOUS ROUNDS.

FAQs

What is the easiest plushie to crochet? ›

The basic Teddy Bear is a great project for novices in search of an easy free crochet pattern. The Teddy Bear Crochet Amigurumi pattern can be made by working in spiral rounds and using only 1 yarn color. Then, you can sew a safe nose and eyes for its face. You can also make crocheted eyes using leftover yarn.

How long does it take to crochet an amigurumi doll? ›

Assuming you have some basic crochet techniques under your belt, picking up amigurumi could be done within the span of an afternoon, perhaps even 1-2 hours. If you are starting how to learn crocheting from scratch, it could take a little bit longer, perhaps 1-2 weeks if you are quite diligent about it.

What crochet stitch is used for plushies? ›

The X-shaped single crochet stitch is a hugely popular style of stitch for making amigurumi because it can make your stitches look that little bit neater. It can also help make your tension tighter, which is great for ensuring the stuffing can't be seen through your stitches.

What is the easiest amigurumi yarn to use? ›

Acrylic is still a great yarn for beginners. It's also machine washable, which is a huge plus if you're going to be giving your amigurumi to kids because that little critter is bound to get dirty over time. But acrylic yarn isn't very soft, which might not make it the best yarn for a snuggly toy.

What size crochet hook is best for plushies? ›

So the best hook size for amigurumi would probably be a 3.0mm, commonly used with DK yarn which is how most crocheters start off with amigurumi. Remember to try and use one size down from the recommended corresponding yarn label or weight!

What size yarn is best for amigurumi? ›

When working on Amigurumi projects, I recommend using #2 | Fine Sport | 4 or 5 ply OR #3 | Light Worsted | DK OR even #4 | Medium Worsted | Aran yarn. You don't want to use yarn that is too bulky as it will be difficult to work with and your toy will lose those delicate details that are so special about Amigurumi.

Is amigurumi crochet over or under? ›

However, if you're making amigurumi or a tapestry crochet project, I highly recommend yarning under! Since I make so much amigurumi, I continue to use my yu/yo method most of the time.

Can a beginner crochet amigurumi? ›

When you are first starting out, it is best to choose patterns that let you single crochet or whip stitch pieces together. You want to join amigurumi pieces with those methods because they are easy to learn and very beginner-friendly.

Is making crochet plushies hard? ›

The answer is yes and no! The ease of making Amigurumi really depends on one main key factor, your level of crochet skill. If you have never picked up a crochet hook before then it would be wise to learn a few basics before you attempt an amigurumi pattern. But that is all you need, a few basic stitches.

Can a beginner crochet a plushie? ›

Absolutely! Amigurumi can be a wonderful project for those just beginning their crochet journey. To make most beginner-level amigurumi patterns, you'll need to know a handful of simple crochet stitches, like single crochet, increases, and decreases.

What is the best stuffing for amigurumi crochet? ›

Some people like to use traditional stuffing materials like polyester fiberfill. Others prefer to use natural materials like cotton or wool. You can also experiment with different materials like plastic pellets, rice, or beans to give your amigurumi a different weight or texture.

How many hook sizes should you go down for amigurumi? ›

Take the smallest recommended hook size (4.5 mm) and subtract 2 mm from that. So the hook size you should use for amigurumi is 2.5 mm. 2.5 mm isn't a common crochet hook size in the US, but it is right between 2 hook sizes – size B (2.25 mm) and size C (2.75 mm).

What size crochet hook to use for amigurumi? ›

The recommended hook size for amigurumi is usually smaller than what is recommended for the yarn weight. This is because you want tight, compact stitches to create a firm fabric that will hold its shape. The most commonly used hook sizes for amigurumi are 2.25mm, 2.5mm, and 3mm.

What brand of yarn is best for amigurumi? ›

When making an amigurumi doll, we recommend using yarn with diverse skin tone colors. Some popular brands of yarn for amigurumi dolls are Lion Brand Skein Tones, some Schachenmayr Catania colors, and some Paintbox Yarns Cotton DK colors.

What is the easiest thing to crochet? ›

What's the easiest crochet project to start with? Small square coasters or dishcloths allow you to practice and learn new stitches with a quick payoff.

What is the easiest material to crochet with? ›

Wool Yarn

Wool yarns carry a forgiving nature, making it easier to work with as you learn different crochet stitches and techniques, making it one of the best yarns for beginners in crochet, as well as in knitting.
