Creative Mindset and Philosophical Connection
Erin Tjin A Ton (NL, 1985) and Gosia Kaczmarek (PL, 1981) have formed the artist duo BetweenTwoHands since 2015. Their shared interest in philosophy and their drive to confront materials are at the core of their collaboration. Together, they have created five spatial installations that sit at the intersection of theater and visual art.
Craftsmanship and Material Resistance
Erin and Gosia are master craftsmen who work with great care and a love for technique. They use materials such as ceramics, paper, and wood, and their work emerges through an intuitive creative process in which they embrace the resistance of these materials. Their objects come to life through their hands and invite the audience to interact, creating space for reflection on human experiences and societal themes such as loneliness, climate change, and technological advancements.
Exhibitions and Recognitions
BetweenTwoHands has exhibited their work in various countries, including the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, Switzerland, Norway, France, China, and Russia. In the Netherlands, their installations have been shown at the Over het IJ Festival, Pop Arts Festival, CODA Museum, and Museum Belvédère. Their work has received international recognition; they won the Ruth van der Steenhoven Prize for their performances The Journal and Duodenum, and the Canadian Arlyn Award for outstanding design in object theater for Paperwork.
Erin Tjin A Ton
Erin studied Goldsmithing at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy and delved into the relationship between objects and the body. She continued her research with a Master's in Artistic Research at the University of Amsterdam. Between 2011 and 2015, she undertook various residencies in China and Lithuania. In 2013, she created a theater performance in collaboration with Anna Verduin, where she discovered the value of the passage of time in engaging the audience in a story. She has since integrated this insight into her work at the intersection of theater and visual art.
Gosia Kaczmarek
Gosia grew up in Poland and received a classical art education, specializing in painting. During an exchange in Sweden, she worked on three-dimensional sculptures made from canvases. After her studies, she worked at the puppet animation studio Se-Ma-For. She later moved to Amsterdam to study Interactive Design/Unstable Media at the Rietveld Academy, where she discovered the conceptual side of art. Her passion for making remained, enriched with an interest in how her objects are perceived by the audience.
