Good as hell or truth hurts...?

By Paula Lee

Who says shapewear needs to be boring and nude? Certainly not Lizzo. The Grammy Award–winning superstar is adding to her impressive resume and invigorating the shapewear market with the launch of her new line Yitty. Almost three years in the works and an homage to her childhood nickname, the brand embraces size-inclusive shapewear that celebrates all bodies and inspires confidence—no surprise considering how empowering Lizzo’s anthemic music is.

“I was tired of seeing this sad, restrictive shapewear that literally no one wanted to wear,” Lizzo said. “I had an epiphany, like, Who can actually do something about this? [so] I decided to take on the challenge of allowing women to feel unapologetically good about themselves again.”

In addition to the expected neutral shades, Yitty’s offerings are intentionally colorful and loud. Let your public get a glimpse of the splashy yellow or kaleidoscopic butterfly print, or allow the foundations to discreetly do their job smoothing and sculpting—the point is, it’s up to you. From the second-skin shaping panties and bodysuits that could moonlight as going-out tops, to the printed mesh bras that would suffice as low-impact workout companions (as well as comfy loungewear), everything is available in sizes 6X through XS. And since it’s in collaboration with activewear brand Fabletics, the whole range is affordable, with prices from $14.95 to $69.95 for VIP members—you don’t have to be a member to purchase, though.

With that said, a few game Oprah Daily staffers of various body shapes, sizes, and shapewear experiences gave the Yitty collection a spin. Here are our honest thoughts.

Holly Carter, Contributing Lifestyle Editor

"Since the advent of Spanx, shapewear has been my thing. It just makes me feel supported in all senses of the word—and braced to take on the world. When I received the Shaping Midi Bra and High Waist Short set, I was very excited by the thought that my support could also have some sass—it’s red! I tried the XL and was concerned that it might be too big, but the sizing is very forgiving given all the stretch the pieces have. I love that the shorts stayed put; no rolling down thanks to the grippy waistband. And when a wireless bra comes my way, I’m always all in. This one gave me a pretty decent shape, and I like how it hit the top of the shorts, making it look and feel like I had on a curve-enhancing onesie. I must say, my waist felt snatched. And I have been waiting to use that word.”

Elena Odulak, Assistant to the GM and Creative Director

"I have always been a fan of shapewear with multiple different uses, and that’s just what Yitty brings to the table. On the practical side, the shaping bralette and coordinating shorts hug and lift in all the right places, and in the cheery yellow color, I wouldn’t be afraid to show it off in Pilates class. I also love the low-key sexy Smoothing Sleeved Thong Bodysuit with sheer mesh sleeves: I can lose the bra and wear it with my favorite leather pants for a night on the town. This is truly shapewear that’s not meant to be hidden—a win-win!”

Paula Lee, Fashion Editor

“I’m a shapewear rookie, not because I don’t need it (au contraire), but because I don’t really like to feel like a sausage in casing (non, merci). However, when Lizzo announced her new shapewear collection, I was game to test out a piece for market research, you see. I shimmied into the tiny-looking lavender Shaping Thong Bodysuit as I blasted “Cuz I Love You,” and the first thing I noticed was how soft, stretchy, and breathable it was. The top area is lightly contoured, and even though I’m a C cup, I could go braless and still feel supported without the pancake-boob effect—actually, they looked pretty perky. Since the piece is from the seamless Nearly Naked group, it’s less about sucking in and more about smoothing. Though I’m not brave enough to wear this alone as a top (it’s sheer), I loved the low scoop back and would sport this under a clingy silk slip or knit.”

Shelby Copeland, Assistant to the Editor at Large and Assistant, Social & Livestream Events

“Usually, I am not a print kind of gal, but Yitty’s Mesh Me Smoothing Midi Bralette and High Waist Shorts in Bright Ass Blue Buttafly are cute and bold enough to wear as standalone pieces. Their smoothing mesh style is lightweight and breathable without being flimsy, while the inner lining keeps everything in place and provides an extra layer of coverage. More than anything, I actually feel comfortable and confident wearing it. And it’s perfect for lounging around on a warm day or for an at-home workout."

Yitty Nearly Naked Shaping Mid Thigh Bodysuit

Julia Berick, Editor, Essays & Voices

“Lizzo could sell me canned tuna with that radiant energy—though she wouldn’t—so I was already predisposed to the offerings. I’ve only just begun my shapewear journey, but even with few points of comparison, the line had some noteworthy strengths. Struggling into shapewear gets me grumpy at my anatomy; hot and huffy defeats the yas-ifying effect I’m going for to begin with. But I slipped right into the Shaping Mid-Thigh Bodysuit, which was a serious plus, and fun fact: It has an open gusset for easy bathroom access. Once on, the uni was light and flexible; I could still bend, I could still snap. Yitty didn’t magically bring my dress size down, nor could I really make it into my tightest pants. Instead, I was myself but a little more camera-ready in a selection of other outfits—and that seems like just what Lizzo wants for us all.”
